With marriages between Japanese and foreigners increasing, the country is under pressure to bring its laws on child custody into line with other countries.
Dozens of cases have been reported of Japanese parents who have divorced abroad taking their children back to Japan despite joint custody rulings.
Roland Buerk met Alex, who has not seen his daughters since his ex-wife took them back to Japan.
